Youth & Family Counselling

Young people don’t always have the words yet, and families don’t always have the room. Our counsellors work with Indigenous young people and with families together — the arguments, the silences, the things that have been passed down without anyone choosing to pass them. Our counsellors are FNHA-registered and bill FNHA directly, and sessions run by video or phone anywhere in British Columbia, or in person in Chilliwack.

What this is

Counselling for Indigenous young people, and counselling for families together. Sometimes those are the same appointment and sometimes they aren’t — a young person may want an hour that belongs only to them, and a family may need an hour where the things nobody says out loud finally get said.

Who it’s for

  • Young people who are struggling and can’t find the words for it yet.
  • Parents, grandparents, aunties, and caregivers who can see something is wrong.
  • Families where the same argument keeps happening and nobody knows why.
  • Families carrying the effects of residential schools, the Sixties Scoop, and the child-welfare system into a generation that never saw them.

How it works

Tell us who is involved and what has been happening. We’ll work out with you whether that starts with the young person, with the adults, or with everyone in the same room — and it can change as you go.

Nobody is made to talk, and nobody is made to attend. For a lot of young people, a video session from their own room is a far lower step than a waiting room.

Our approach

We practise Two-Eyed Seeing — the traditional knowledge of the Stó:lō people held alongside modern clinical care, neither one asked to make room for the other. Our counsellors are trauma-informed and culturally safe, and they understand what a family can be carrying before anyone in it says a word.

What it costs

Our counsellors are FNHA-registered, and we bill FNHA directly — eligible members pay nothing out of pocket, and there’s no claim to file afterwards. If you’re covered by NIHB instead, or you’re not sure what you’re covered by, ask us. We’d rather check than have you go without.

Getting started

Send us a message or call. We’ll help you check your eligibility, match you with a counsellor, and book your first session.

FAQ

Common questions

Can the whole family come, or is it one person at a time?

Both are possible. Some families come together, some send one person, some do a bit of each. Tell us who is involved and what is going on, and we’ll work out with you what makes sense before anything is booked.

My teen doesn’t want to talk to a stranger.

That’s a fair position, and a common one. Nobody is made to talk. A first session can be nothing more than meeting the counsellor and deciding whether to come back — and doing it by video, from their own room, is often easier than sitting in an office.

Will my child’s counsellor understand where we come from?

We are an Indigenous-led practice on Stó:lō territory. Our counsellors are culturally safe and trauma-informed, and they understand intergenerational and residential-school trauma without a young person having to explain their family’s history to them.

Is youth and family counselling covered?

For eligible First Nations members in BC, FNHA’s mental-health benefit may cover counselling sessions. Our counsellors are FNHA-registered and we bill FNHA directly, so eligible members pay nothing out of pocket. We’ll help you check your family’s eligibility before you book.

We don’t live near Chilliwack. Does that rule us out?

No. We deliver counselling by video or phone anywhere in British Columbia, so a family spread across the province can still meet with the same counsellor. If you’d rather be in the room, our Chilliwack centre is open to you.
