FNHA Counselling

If you’re a First Nations person in British Columbia, the First Nations Health Authority may cover your mental-health counselling. Our counsellors are FNHA-registered and bill FNHA directly, so eligible members pay nothing out of pocket. We’ll help you check whether you’re eligible and get you booked, entirely by video or phone from wherever you are.

What this is

FNHA’s mental-health benefit exists so that First Nations people in BC can reach a counsellor without cost being the reason they don’t. The part people get stuck on is the paperwork: which counsellors are registered, whether you have to pay up front, how much benefit you have left.

We take that part off you. Our counsellors are FNHA-registered, and we bill FNHA directly — eligible members pay nothing out of pocket, and there’s no claim to file afterwards.

Who it’s for

  • First Nations people in British Columbia, on or off reserve.
  • Anyone who’s been told to “find a provider on the list” and didn’t know where to start.
  • People outside the Lower Mainland — we work by video and phone across the province.

If you’re covered by NIHB instead, or you’re not sure what you’re covered by, ask us. We’d rather check than have you go without.

Still working out how the provider list itself works? Our guide on how to find an FNHA-registered counsellor in BC walks through the list, eligibility, and what to ask before you book — whether or not you end up seeing us.

Our approach

We practise Two-Eyed Seeing — the traditional knowledge of the Stó:lō people held alongside modern clinical care, neither one asked to make room for the other. Our counsellors are trauma-informed and culturally safe, and they understand the specific weight of intergenerational and residential-school trauma without you having to explain it first.

FAQ

Common questions

Is counselling covered by FNHA?

For eligible First Nations members in BC, FNHA’s mental-health benefit may cover counselling sessions. Coverage depends on your eligibility and your remaining benefit for the year. We’ll help you check before your first session, so there are no surprises.

How do I find an FNHA counsellor?

FNHA maintains a list of registered mental-health providers. Our counsellors are FNHA-registered, so you can book with us directly — we bill FNHA on your behalf rather than asking you to pay and claim back.

Does FNHA cover virtual counselling?

We deliver counselling by video or phone anywhere in BC, which matters if you’re outside a major centre. Whether your sessions are covered depends on your eligibility and FNHA’s current benefit rules — we’ll confirm that with you before you book.

What if I’m not eligible for FNHA?

Get in touch anyway. You may be covered by NIHB (Non-Insured Health Benefits) or another plan, and we’ll walk through the options with you before you commit to anything.
