Depression
Depression Counselling
Depression isn't only sadness. It can be a flatness where feeling used to be, a heaviness that makes ordinary things hard, sleep and appetite that go sideways, or a quiet voice telling you it won't get better. It is common, it is treatable, and reaching out is not something you have to earn by being "bad enough" first. Our counsellors work with depression at a pace you set. They are FNHA-registered and bill FNHA directly, and sessions run by video or phone anywhere in British Columbia, or in person in Chilliwack.

What this is
Depression is more than a bad week. It can look like a loss of interest in things that used to matter, a tiredness that sleep doesn’t fix, difficulty concentrating, or a heaviness that makes small tasks feel large. It can also be quiet — someone getting through the day while feeling almost nothing. None of that is a personal failing, and none of it is permanent.
Counselling helps by giving the low mood somewhere to go and something to do — understanding what’s underneath it, and building, at your pace, ways back toward the things that matter. Our counsellors are culturally safe and trauma-informed, and they understand that for many First Nations people depression can be tangled up with grief, history, and trauma that was never given room to heal.
Who it’s for
- First Nations people in British Columbia, on or off reserve.
- Anyone whose low mood, exhaustion, or loss of interest has hung around and is wearing them down.
- People who have tried counselling before and left because it didn’t fit.
If depression is showing up alongside anxiety, grief, or trauma, that’s okay — you don’t have to separate it out before reaching out. We’ll start where you are.
Our approach
We practise culturally safe, trauma-informed care: the work moves at your pace, you decide what’s talked about, and nothing is required of you that you haven’t agreed to. Our counsellors are FNHA-registered and bill FNHA directly, so for eligible members the counselling itself may be covered — we’ll help you check your eligibility before you book.
Getting started
Send us a message or call. Tell us a little about what’s going on and whether you’d rather meet by video, phone, or in person in Chilliwack, and we’ll help you check your eligibility and match you with a counsellor.
FAQ
Common questions
How do I know if it's depression and not just a rough patch?
You don't have to know before you reach out — that's part of what the first sessions are for. If low mood, loss of interest, tiredness, or hopelessness have hung around for a while and are making ordinary life harder, that's reason enough to talk to someone. A counsellor can help you make sense of what you're carrying without you needing a label first.
Is depression counselling covered by FNHA?
For eligible First Nations members in BC, FNHA's mental-health benefit may cover counselling sessions. Our counsellors are FNHA-registered and we bill FNHA directly, so eligible members pay nothing out of pocket. We'll help you check your eligibility before you book anything.
I've tried counselling before and it didn't help. Why would this be different?
Our counsellors are Indigenous-led and culturally safe — you're not spending your first sessions explaining the history, and the things that are hardest to say are things they've heard before. For a lot of people, that's the difference between counselling that fits and counselling that doesn't.
Can I do this by video, from home?
Yes. We deliver counselling by video or phone anywhere in British Columbia, and many people find it easier to do this work from a space they already feel safe in. If you'd rather be in person, our Chilliwack centre on Stó:lō territory is open to you.
What if the depression comes with anxiety or past trauma?
That's common, and you don't need to untangle it before reaching out. The same counsellor can work with low mood alongside anxiety, grief, or trauma — we follow what matters most to you rather than treating one part on its own.
